Do you like this?

Well, you probably wouldn’t ask a journalist (good call). You could ask patients, but since most lack the medical expertise to judge a dentist’s qualifications and different patients will have varying opinions on the same dentist (one patient’s best experience may be another patient’s worst), this probably isn’t a great idea either.

The most reliable method would be to ask other dentists — and that’s exactly what Top Dentists does.

The following pages list the Greater Akron dentists who had the most peer referrals, divided into seven dental specialties. And while these guys and gals are never going to be able to turn a root canal into a great time, they can help to make that dreaded trip to the dentist a little more pleasant.

Decoding the Dental Specialties

Endodontics: It used to be that when a tooth became diseased, you’d lose it. A visit to a dentist who specializes in endodontics (root canals) can save your tooth — and your smile.

General Dentisty: This Jack or Jill of all trades provides services to promote the maintenance of oral hygiene and tooth care — and is likely the dentist who gives you a good talkin’ to about not flossing. (Only about 49 percent of Americans floss daily.) The American Dental Association recommends visiting a dentist at least once every six months.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery: These surgeons specialize in treatment of facial defects, misaligned jaws and problem wisdom teeth; they may also treat accident victims.

Orthodontics: Teens and adults with misaligned teeth often head to the orthodontist. Options include braces, retainers, headgear and, in more severe cases, breaking the jaw to set it in a proper position.

Pediatric Dentistry: These dentists specialize in treating and maintaining proper oral hygiene in children, ranging from infants to adolescents.

Periodontics: Just say “no” to gum disease. These dentists specialize in diagnosing, treating and preventing gum disease. (Eight out of 10 people have some form of periodontal disease.)

Prosthodontics: If you need dentures, are missing a tooth or need a crown or bridgework, call a prosthodontist — who specializes in replacing missing teeth and restoring natural teeth.
