Do you like this?

Large Louie Burger

Hamburgers at Louie's on Akron's northeast side have frequently been voted best in town.

While there is huge debate over whether or not the hamburger sandwich was invented by the Menches Brothers, who originated here in Akron, or had been around for many years before, the residents of Hamburg, New York, continue to give them credit for it.  They say it was first offered for sale in its current form at their county fair early in the 20th Century.

That's why the National Hamburg Festival is organized by Buffalo resident Drew Cerza, and held at the Lock 3 Park in downtown Akron over the July 17-18 weekend.  While I'll be out of town and unable to attend the Festival, this is the fifth year it has been held in Akron, and it has been a growing and successful promotion.  In recognition, I'm going to review several of Akron's most famous burger stands and burgers over the coming days.

In the meantime, if you are interested in the semi-official history (please remember that anything you read on the web is subject to verification!) of the hamburger sandwich, here's a link to the Wikipedia page on the subject:

For complete infomation on the National Hamburger Festival, you can't do better than the organizer's own home page with links to everything from the schedule to participating restaurants:

Hope you have fun!
