Catch glimpses of a rushing river and in-service railroad tracks while dining at the River Merchant. Located beside the Cuyahoga River in vibrant Kent, this restaurant blends craft food and beverages with rustic flair. “We also incorporate some industrial elements, such as our railroad spike tap handles and wine making equipment, … that complement the active rail line,” says Cameron Thomas, owner and general manager, via email. Dine on dishes like Szechuan short rib ($30) — topped with crispy wonton strips and tuxedo sesame seeds — or pesto gnocchi ($22) — with sauteed spinach, fire-roasted tomatoes and a house-made pesto cream sauce — at the scenic destination that opened in March 2020. Driven by chef Perry Smith, its New American-style menu provides twists on classics and combinations of different cultural cuisines, creating fresh flavors. Order the French-cut pork chop ($28), crowned with apple cherry chutney and served over maple bacon Brussels sprouts and mashed red-skinned potatoes, and the blackberry smash ($13), made with bourbon, blackberries and fresh mint. Plus, shop its wine market, which offers over 350 curated options of wine, craft beer and more. “The River Merchant is a unique dining and shopping experience,” Thomas says.
