Each wearing sashes representing a different state in the Union, the women pictured celebrated the Fourth of July in Center Park — now known as Tallmadge Circle Park — in 1908. Created by the Rev. David Bacon in 1807, the design of Tallmadge Circle supplied residents with easy access to the church and town center. Eight routes — oriented to the true directions of the compass — branch out from the circle. Influenced by early 19th-century New England town planning, the circle is one of the best-preserved examples of New England’s role in the settlement of Ohio’s Western Reserve. Although it no longer has its own Fourth of July celebration, Tallmadge hosts the Circle Festival & Light Parade, an annual event that features food, entertainment, a beer and wine garden and fireworks. On Aug. 8 from 5 to 11 p.m., join the festival and parade at Tallmadge Circle Park and celebrate over 200 years of history.
