The holidays are a great time to share wine with friends, family and loved ones. Here are two great wine suggestions for the upcoming season.

The 2012 Biltmore Christmas White wine is a blend of Gewurztraminer, Muscat Canelli, Chenin Blanc and Reisling. The wine is food-friendly and pairs especially well with desserts. If you have the opportunity to visit the Biltmore House at Christmas time, the holiday decorations will take your breath away. For the past three years, the Biltmore Winery has had a label contest. This year’s winning label was painted by Marcus C. Thomas, an artist who survived a snow skiing accident that rendered him paralyzed from the shoulders down. To learn more about Thomas and the inspiring way he paints, check out his website at marcusthomas.com. This wine retails at $9.99.

The Mumm Napa Brut Prestige is a signature sparkling wine made from the best Chardonnay and Pinot Noir fruit and is made the old-fashioned way – methode champenoise, which is the most complex procedure for making sparkling wines. Mumm Napa Brut Prestige has been called “the perfect party guest – it’s lively, elegant and always appropriate.” This sparkling wine is excellent with hors d’oeuvres, spicy foods, desserts or for celebrating the holidays. It has won more medals at major wine competitions than any other wine in its class. Two years ago, Wine Spectator named it to the magazine’s top 100 list. And Wine Enthusiast calls Mumm Napa one of “America’s Best Tasting Rooms.” If you’re going to the Napa Valley, be sure to visit Mumm Napa and end your day on their terrace enjoying their sparkling wines! This wine retails at $15.99.

Look for these fine wines at Acme Fresh Markets, Buehler’s Fresh Foods, West Point Market, Papa Joe’s, Mustard Seed, 750ml, Wine Reserve of Medina, Fisher’s and other fine wine retailers throughout Greater Akron.

Wine Wisdom

When opening a bottle of Champagne or sparkling wine, untwine the wire and always keep your thumb on top of the cork. Wrap a cloth or napkin around the cork, then hold on the cork and twist the bottom of the bottle away from you. This will help prevent the top of the cork from breaking off, and it’ll also protect you should a loose cork dislodge on its own.
