Akron Film Festival: Air Doll

I'd like to personally thank Akron Film for getting this film into the city limits.

Not sure what it is about Asian cinema that magnetically allures me.  But whatever it is, it was there, in the fine print of Air Doll. It is playful in a way that subtly underscores the darker (if not offensive) moments in the film. And these elements are held in a colloid of the supernatural...I'm not sure how else to describe a film where a man's blowup sex-toy comes to life and begins to live a life of her own.

WAIT! Don't walk away yet! I know it sounds ridiculous.

As much as our American minds want this film to be strictly about this "air doll" and her life, refreshingly, the film serves as much as a mirror as it does a window............... As Nozomi (Doona Bae) slowly makes her way out into and around the streets of Tokyo, we see a masterful dichotomy between the object she was created to be and the childlike innocence and naivety she carries.

It speaks to us, the audience about what it is that we hold and why we hold it dear. s
