Community programs reach milestones for 91.3FM The Summit with help from Barry Manilow

Two important community-based programs, Music Alive and Turning Outward, hit milestones this summer for regional public broadcasting station 91.3 FM-WAPS The Summit thanks in part to a generous donation from international mega-star Barry Manilow.

A new Yamaha Stage Level electronic keyboard piano was donated by Barry Manilow at a recent concert, marking the 200th musical instrument collected for Music Alive, The Summit's "ultimate recycling program.

In partnership with Akron Public Schools and Taylor Band and Orchestra, Music Alive gathers used instruments which are refurbished and distributed to local students who cannot afford to purchase or rent. Flutes, clarinets, trumpets and violins are among the most popular donations to date.

Another project, Turning Outward, saw its 50th broadcast last month with a segment on Community Support Services of Akron. The program gives voice to the local nonprofit sector through live interviews conducted by 91.3 team members.

By turning the microphone to the community, agencies in the station's service areas have the opportunity to discuss important services, events, public issues and more. A wide variety of organizations have participated, including the Rotary Club of Akron/Camp Rotary, Crown Point Ecology Center, Akron Film & Pixel Festival, The Bluecoats Drum & Bugle Corps, Multiple Sclerosis Society and Medina Creative Housing.

Both programs are ongoing, as part of The Summit's mission to use its public broadcasting platform to support the community while featuring an innovative mix of adult alternative and local music.
