Shaker Square Cinemas celebrate 75th Anniversary

On December 27, 1937 a gorgeous new movie theatre opened its doors on Shaker Square. During the past 75 years the name has changed from The Colony Theatre to Shaker Square Cinemas and its single auditorium has been converted to six, but the cinema is going strong and remains a key part of this historic Cleveland neighborhood.

To honor Shaker Square Cinemas’ 75th Anniversary, Cleveland Cinemas will be hosting a month-long celebration in December culminating in a special screening of the very first film to ever play at the theatre, IT’S LOVE I’M AFTER starring Bette Davis, Leslie Howard and Olivia de Havilland.

Keeping with the theme of this classic comedy’s title, Shaker Square Cinemas is inviting patrons to write a short essay about their most loving movie memory that happened at this theatre. Whether it’s about falling in love with someone on a date at Shaker Square Cinemas or just falling in love with the movie itself, it’s love we’re after!

Essays may not exceed 200 words and may be submitted at the theatre box office or e-mailed to shakersquarememories@gmail.com. All entries must be received by 5:00 PM on Friday, December 14, 2012. One winning essay will be selected and its author will receive a 2013 Season Pass to Shaker Square Cinemas and $100 gift certificates to Fire Food and Drink & SASA. The winning essay will be posted on the Cleveland Cinemas website as well as read to the audience before the screening of “It’s Love I’m After” on December 27th at 10:00 AM.
