Winners of Kaleidoscope 2012 named at Summit Artspace Gallery

This year’s winners of the Kaleidoscope exhibition at Summit Artspace were announced at a gallery reception November 16.

The annual art show is presented by the Alliance for the Visual Arts in Akron (AVA), a group representing over 500 local artists from the Akron Society of Artists, Artists of Rubber City, Cuyahoga Valley Art Center and Women's Art League. The show runs through December 31.

First place honors went to John Frieman for his mixed media Anatomy #64. John Sokal took second place for his mixed media work Crows in the Thicket, and Kimberly S. Moore won third place for her pastel titled Twilight, Silver Creek . The judges also gave honorable mentions to Vibrations Under Glass , photography by Marita Bitians , mixed media called The Coordinates Forgone by Shirley Ende-Saxe , an acrylic painting called Watching the Shadows Dance by Carol Klingel and an aqua media piece Reprieve by Susan Mencini .

Members of the four groups entered artworks in all types of media. Guest judges, artist John P. Smolko and artist Marina Mangubi served selected the works for display and the winning artists. Akron artist Mary Ann Mosyjowski served as show coordinator.

The annual People’s Choice Award , selected by the votes of gallery visitors, will be presented during the First Night® Akron celebration on December 31. The winner will receive a kaleidoscope created by Akron glass artist Bob Pozarski. Also during the exhibition, there will be a series of free artist demonstrations. All will be from 1 to 3 pm. No registration is required.

Summit Artspace, a project of the Akron Area Arts Alliance in cooperation with Summit County government, is located in a historic downtown Akron building at 140 E. Market Street, one block east of the Akron Art Museum. Gallery hours are Thursday noon to 9 pm, Friday and Saturday noon to 5 pm. Admission and parking are free.

Kaleidoscope will also be open December 1 from 5 to 9 pm as part of the Downtown Artwalk and December 31 from 5 to 9 pm as part of the First Night® Akron.
