Brewery Ommegang

On the lookout for something that will warm your soul during these cold winter months? Look no further than Cooperstown, New York, where baseball is not the only thing flying high these days. Known for such beers as Gnomegang Blond Ale, Hennepin Farmhouse Saison and Rare Vos, as well as a series of limited collaboration ales with HBO’s hit series Game of Thrones, Brewery Ommegang’s master craftsmanship shines in arguably their finest moment as brewers—the creation of Three Philosophers Quadrupel Ale.

Built in 1997 on 136 acres of land meant to be a hop farm in Cooperstown, New York, Ommegang is the only brewery in the United States dedicated to brewing nothing but bottle-conditioned Belgian ales. In 2003, beloved Belgian behemoth Duvel Moortgat purchased full ownership of Brewery Ommegang and helped propel it further into the limelight. Recognized with nearly two dozen esteemed awards over the last two decades—including numerous medals at both the World Beer Cup and the Great American Beer Festival—Ommegang brews 35,000 barrels a year and is now distributed in 44 states.

Pouring out in a dark, yet soothing color with notes of sweet dark fruits, sour cherries and raisins, Three Philosophers goes down incredibly smooth with a nice warming and dry finish that will please even those unfamiliar with the style.

This Belgian-style blend of Ommegang Quadruple ale and Liefmans Kriek clocks in at 9.7 percent ABV and begs for aging. Some lucky consumers may even be able to get their hands on gift sets featuring vintage bottles from the past few years. Like a fine wine, Three Philosophers only gets better with age, so don’t be afraid to purchase a few to keep in your ever growing wine/beer cellar.

Available in both 12oz four packs ($14.99) and 750ml cork-and-cage bottles ($9.99), this elegant selection can be found at select Acme, Fishers Foods and Giant Eagle locations, as well as your finer craft beer stops such as Mustard Seed, World Market, Lizardville and 101 Bottles of Beer on the Wall.
