Diners' Diary: Retro Dog

Gluten-Free Mom tastes theRetro Dog and Cream Soda.

I like Retro Dog because it’s decorated with bright colors and lights, like an amusement park, but has higher quality food. I ordered the signature Retro Dog without the bun and ate it with a fork because the coney and cheese sauces make it so messy. I consider myself a cream soda aficionado, and the Dog’s homebrewed cream soda is very vanilla-y and not overly sweet.

The Guac-a-Holic tastes the White Hot dog and Veggie Fries.

The White Hot dog was okay but the basket of Veggie Fries was the showstopper: crispy, hot fries covered in cheese sauce (which was nothing special) with a side of vegetarian Coney sauce. The Coney sauce — with tomatoes, sweet onions and a touch of spice — was the perfect topping. Although the sauce was delish, I can’t bring myself to spend nearly $10 for a hot dog, fries and drink that remind me of stadium food.

Lil Circus Girl tastes theRetro Bean Burger.

Retro Dog reminds me of a “Back To The Future” movie set. I ordered the Retro Bean Burger, made of black beans, corn, brown rice and chili peppers, and topped with lettuce, tomato, shredded pickle and tasty Retro Rocket Sauce. I’ve never ordered a bean burger in a restaurant and was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. If I went back, I’d definitely order this item again.

Aquaboy tastes the Kraut Dog.

I’m somewhat of an expert when it comes to hot dogs. You see, I’ve been eating at least one hot dog at the turn of every golf course I’ve played over the years. Retro Dog’s hot dogs are some of the best but the kraut was mushy. Next time I’m gonna try a hot dog with the homemade Coney sauce.

Potentially the Web Guy tastes the Big Sal.

I’ll be honest: When I ordered the Big Sal, I was totally expecting a honking slap of traditional Italian sausage but was pleasantly surprised to see the offering in patty form. The verdict: A healthy slice of provolone and the restaurant’s secret Retro Rocket Sauce make for one scrumptious lunch and a refreshing change from the hot dog heavy menu.

The Beekeeper’s Wife tastes the Carolina Dog.

This hot dog had some texture to it and was served the only way a dog should be served: char-grilled. The bun was a little lacking for me as I would have liked it toasted. I liked the snappiness of the coleslaw which was a great counter to the spicy Coney sauce. And what’s a hot dog without yellow mustard? My mouth is watering as I relive this doggy delight.

The Spicy Vegetarian tastes the Retro Veggie Dog.

I’m very picky when it comes to veggie products that pose as their meat counterpart, and veggie hotdogs are very hard to make tasty. The vegetarian chili on top was very good, and the veggie dog was spicy, which I usually like; it just didn’t work well for me and isn’t something I would get again. I love the Retro Dog concept so I’d definitely go back and try something different.
