Internships: Editorial

Editorial Internships

Akron Life magazine’s editorial department is currently seeking editorial interns to become a part of our team. The ideal candidate should have an advanced knowledge of grammar, story structure and an eye for detail. We are looking for a student with strong writing, communication and research skills who has experience with magazine writing — preferably with published clips — and is pursuing a career in the publishing field.

Candidates must be proficient with Microsoft Word and comfortable speaking with sources of all kinds both over the phone and in person. Job duties include writing feature stories of various lengths, working as a team to develop story ideas, brainstorming and researching ideas thoroughly, proofreading the magazine and fact-checking all information.

A self-starter who has a healthy sense of adventure will be best suited for this position. Ideal candidates will also have:

  1. A way with words and imagery
  2. Attention to detail and strong organizational skills
  3. The ability to work well as part of a team, as well as in a deadline-driven environment
  4. A working laptop
  5. A reliable form of transportation, as short-distance travel may be a part of the internship
  6. A willingness to learn new styles of writing and have your writing workshopped
  7. A working knowledge of Summit, Stark, Portage, Medina and Wayne counties

Although this is an unpaid, part-time internship, the candidate will have many opportunities to have work published — which, in this industry, is worth its weight in gold. Students are asked to work between 10 and 15 hours per week; however, scheduling is flexible. Interested candidates should send a cover letter, resume, four to six portfolio clips and a list of three references to Managing Editor Kelly Petryszyn at  kpetryszyn@bakermediagroup.com. The subject line should read: Internship Applicant [your name]. Links to online portfolios are also encouraged.
