Our furniture is the set design we choose for our lives. It colors our days every time we walk through our door, so we should choose pieces that inspire us rather than blend into the background.
“I feel that furniture has moods,” says Rosemary Hamed, the owner of Scott Thomas Furniture. “Whether you’re entertaining or just relaxing, you want something that brings art into your home — furniture that [when] you walk into a room, you can feel something.”
To spark a mood, select statement furniture that are art pieces themselves, such as Hamed’s eye-catching collection that showcases the metalwork of world-renowned Akron sculptor Don Drumm.
Styling with statement furniture can be challenging, so Hamed offers seasoned advice using her Drumm collection as reference.
Try it:
Function and Fashion
Statement furniture can be both artistic and useful. “The credenza is great in a living room and a dining room. There’s a lot of storage space so they can go in almost any room,” says Hamed. Maximize utility by using it as an entertainment center in a living room or spot to display colorful decor in a foyer. In a dining room, set etched platters atop the credenza for an hors d‘oeuvres serving station fit for a sophisticated dinner party.
Trading Spaces
Buck convention and try bold pieces in unexpected rooms to add drama. “Depending on the design of a coffee table, it can go at the end of the bed,” Hamed says. Taking a coffee table with a simple design — like this one by Hamed with Drumm metal leaves — out of the living room and into the bedroom gives you a surprising bench for getting ready. Allow yourself to play with furniture by moving it to where you like it instead of where it’s traditionally featured.
Color Theory
Neutral furniture, like this dark wood metal-sculpted sofa table by Hamed, allows for striking accents. “I love the contrast of art that has color in it with the neutral walls and furniture,” says Hamed. Pair vivid wall art or flowers with dark furniture — making your statement furniture pop as the focal point of a room.
Special deal: If clients list or purchase a home with Howard Hanna real estate agent Chris Hamed they will be gifted a Don Drumm furniture piece.
